Filling a Leadership Position? Wait! - Leadership 360 - Education Week

Filling a Leadership Position? Wait! - Leadership 360 - Education Week

A rapidly changing world requires new leadership models to bring about positive change in

student achievement and life chances.  Asking parents what are their ideas of the qualities o

they require of the new principal without updating them as to what is the latest in research is not only a waste of time but a backward step and an opportunity missed.

Enlisting the army to achieve your strategic goals for the year- the army of parents

Schools have an army to enlist in gaining better outcomes for their students.

But they often overlook them.

I am passionate about changing relationships between parents and schools.

Parents are often seen as the enemy or as a good audience for what is happening in schools. And rightly so, as some parents do give us a bad name.

In my work in schools as a Principal, I realised that I was often distracted by
the negative parents and overlooked what could be achieved by working with the great majority.

Interesting comments by Hattie (2015) that parents are being sold a message by private schools that they have better teacher, smaller classes, and more extracurricular.  "Parents pay
high fees for these schools in the hopes of
insuring a high quality education for their child.
There is the perception of there being slightly
higher odds of a good education (or at least
of meeting the ‘right’ people and avoiding the
‘wrong’ ones)" p.9.

"When students’ prior achievement or socio-
economic background is considered, however,
the evidence shows little difference in achievement between private and public schools in
many systems (OECD,  2014, p. 409 in Hattie, 2015,p.9).

Seven Ways to Rise by Letting Go | Leadership Freak

Seven Ways to Rise by Letting Go | Leadership Freak

7 ways to find success by letting go:

  1. Accept the darkness. You’re supposed to be happy, but you aren’t. Accept it.
  2. Ask negative circumstances, “What are you teaching me?”
  3. Connect with people who are transparent, tough, and tender. When you’re stuck, you need someone who has developed them self and who can help you confront the brutal facts with tenderness. Avoid fixers.
  4. Don’t blame others for your disappointing present. Finger-pointing solidifies the past.
  5. Focus on things within your control, even if they’re small.
  6. Press forward with imperfect clarity.
  7. Monitor energy. Do what gives you energy, not what drains it.
The ability to let go enhances your ability to develop teams, organizations, and yourself.

One of the best definitions of mindfulness comes from Jon Kabat-Zinn, professor of medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts, who says that mindfulness is the awareness that comes when we pay attention—on purpose—in the present moment, while suspending judgment. That's the judgment of how we perceive a person, a situation or any activity at that moment. It's about not living in our heads all the time.

Not an easy thing to do

There are four positions we can take towards others in both our professional and personal relationships.
The most effective according Dr Stephen Covey is the "win-win" paradigm.  This, however, is not an easy
thing to do as we are conditioned though out our lives to compare ourselves with others and compete until
someone wins and someone loses. What do you do to cultivate the 'win-win' position??

You cannot control everything in your life focus on those you can

Focus on the things you can influence then you will expand your knowledge and experience and build trustworthiness.  Focus on your circle of influence and not your circle of concern.  Stephen Covey
